The 2010’s have been a decade full of great sports and exciting games. Through the years, teams have risen to the top, piling victory upon victory, while others have struggled to stay alive. Here, we are recognizing the best teams of the decade in multiple categories, including the best overall (These are statistically based). Here’s to hoping your team made the list!

In Retrospect: Kobe Bryant

Early Life and Passing

      Kobe Bryant, an influential shooting guard, passed away on January 26 of this year, 2020. He died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. His life began in Philadelphia, PA on August 23, 1978. His family greatly impacted his athletic dreams. His father, Joe Bryant, played in both the NBA and the Italian League. His older sisters were also athletic, further surrounding his life in the topic of sports. As a student, he played basketball at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. Though he was academically successful, Kobe entered the NBA directly after his completion of high school.  His NBA dream was brought to life in 1996 when he was drafted, player 13, by the Charlotte Hornets.

Basketball Career

      Bryant’s 20-year long basketball career boasts numerous notable accomplishments. He was an 18-time NBA all-star, won five championships, and more. Utilizing his skills, Kobe became the face of the Los Angeles Lakers. Bryant and the Lakers won the NBA title in 2000, and in 2008, he won his only NBA MVP. Kobe’s final NBA game was on April 13, 2016 where he was met with a sold-out crowd. In 2015, Bryant disclosed that he would retire at the end of the season

Family and Philanthropy

      Kobe Bryant married a young Vanessa Laine in April of 2001. They would later be parents to four daughters: Natalia, Gianna, Bianka, and Capri. Gianna, at only 13 years old, died alongside him in the helicopter crash. Kobe also advocated for youth sports participation, launching a campaign to fight against anxiety and physical idleness. He advocated on the importance of being open about your mental health and supported women’s basketball. Many associate Kobe Bryant exclusively with basketball, but he was so much more. His impact on those around him included but were not limited to as a dad, a husband, a teammate, and an advocate.
